I have a pocket sized watercolor set of 12 half pans that has lasted for quite a few years (although you can see the bottom of some of the pans) and is convenient to take with you when traveling or painting outside. I also like using watercolor pencils, especially for details. They work like regular colored pencils, but they're water-soluble so you can go over the colored area with a wet brush to create a watercolor effect. I sometimes use masking fluid to keep small details white when painting broad washes over them.

Acrylics

Many of my basic acrylic paint colors are cheap ones from Lidl. More recently I got these turquoise, lilac and fuchsia colors that I can't mix from the colors I already had. I also have some metallic colors for accents. I store leftover paint in little pots with lids to make the paint dry slower. I mix paint either on a plastic palette or in the little pots.

I use gesso to prime surfaces, such as wood, cardboard and plastic, for acrylic painting. I varnish my acrylic paintings on canvas with gloss varnish to protect them.

I use synthetic round and flat brushes, softer ones for watercolor and harder ones for acrylics.

I love the vibrant colors of pastels, but they are pretty messy. I use soft pastels for larger areas and pastel pencils for details.

Inks

I like combining watercolor with inks. The black acrylic artists' ink is waterproof so you can paint over it with watercolors. I use ink with dip pens and brushes.

Paper Blocks and Sketchbooks

I use watercolor paper for watercolor and sometimes acrylic paintings. The thicker the paper is, the less likely it is to buckle during painting or when it dries. I usually take the watercolor paper out of the pad and tape it down on a hardboard. I use canvases for acrylic paintings. I usually draw on drawing paper that's thicker than just regular copy paper. I've bought special colored papers for soft pastels, but often end up using just normal copy paper (white or colored), which works too.

I have two A5 sized notebooks. I bought the second one after temporarily losing the first one. But since I have two now, I'm trying to use them for different purposes: one for writing and scribbling down ideas and the other one for better sketches. I usually draw A4 sized sketches for paintings and coloring pages on grid paper.
  • Mont Marte Sketching Journal (yellowish paper)
  • FolderMate Sketchbook A5 110 gsm (white, smooth paper, perforated)
  • Grid paper block

I use graphite transfer paper to transfer sketches to canvas and watercolor paper. I used to transfer sketches with baking paper, which is a cheaper option.

I tend to borrow a lot of art books from the library and buy the ones I know I'll want to get back to time and time again.
